Wood Diary - A Short Film By David Edwin Meyers

In August of 2002, I received a telephone call from my sister. She works for a local funeral home and asked me if I knew a person named "Walker James Woods". They had received his body and were in the process of preparing his funeral. He was my age and I do recall attending high school with him many years ago. In fact, I remember having Walker in several classes and distinctly recall having many conversations with him. My strongest memories of Walker were that he had a prosthetic leg and that he "doodled" on everything - books, assignments, napkins, etc. I had not spoken to him for nearly twenty-five years.

My sister proceeded to tell me the most amazing story. He was found deceased by a neighbor at his home. When they discovered him, they also found a house full of masterful wood and metal carvings that he had done over the course of his lifetime. Some pieces dated back to the late 60's when he could have been no more than seven or eight years of age... Visit the Wood Diary Website

Words are not my native tongue . . . Images are.

David Edwin Meyers has been drawing since he could hold a pencil. Born in Lexington, Kentucky, his creative talents were recognized early, winning several national poster design contests. He conceived the "Don't be a Dummy" seat belt concept in a national poster contest as a high-school senior. After participating in a federally-funded "gifted and talented" secondary program, David attended the Art Academy of Cincinnati (Ohio) and the Ringling College of Art and Design (Sarasota, Florida).

As a young painter, the Henderson Gleaner Journal documented his growth and correspondence with famed American artist Andrew Wyeth, who provided encouragement and commentary on some of David's early works. After graduating from the Ringling College of Art and Design, David took on many positions in the creative realm including - staff illustrator for a Gannett newspaper, corporate art director for Michelin North America, and later, art director and senior creative director at several agencies in the Midwest. At Michelin, David illustrated the well-known Michelin icon "Bib," more commonly known as the Michelin man.

Continuing his education, David enrolled in the Syracuse University MFA graduate program. He spent the next three years studying with world-renown designers, artists, and Society of Illustrators "hall-of-fame" inductees including David Passalacqua, Joe Bowler, Herbert Tauss, David Grove, Bart Forbes, Barron Story, Murray Tinkleman, and others. The program also provided the opportunity to attend visiting faculty classes in Dallas, San Francisco, New York, and Boston - again working with the best agencies, designers, and illustrators in those respective regions. David has been instrumental in the development and promotion of new media throughout the Midwest, transforming two agencies from traditional design and production methods to "digital" and has led the march in the academic arena by implementing and overseeing two graphic design departments at the university level. David has guided and mentored thousands of students as a lecturer and professor and was tabbed "the Godfather of New Media in the Midwest," in the Evansville Courier, a Howard Scripps newspaper, in 2005.

In 1995, David started the new media production house, NetTemple (Exit7). NetTemple offers a wide range of tactical and strategic services and has specialized in digital arena. NetTemple touts an impression list of high-level clientele, including, Paul McCartney, Live Aid, The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Grand Ole Opry, Sony and more. He continues practicing fine art as a prolific painter and photographer, exhibiting regularly in regional and national juried competitions - and has artwork in corporate and private collections throughout the Midwest and Southeast.

Most recently, David has written, directed and produced the digital short film Wood Diary, which has screened in over fifty film festivals worldwide and has won several prestigious festival awards. Currently, Mr. Meyers is a Professor in the Interactive Design and Game Development department at the Savannah College of Art & Design.
